Good morning. Please find your music and meme pairing and tasting notes below. I hope you have a super fantastic day.
Beach House - Space Song
blink-182 - spongebob, patrick, squidward, sandy (full version)
by the multi-talented, multi-platinum Jack Caunter.
Tasting notes:
Sadness, melancholy, yet a lingering tinge of hope on the nose. Space Song is a synthpop flood of emotion, the kind you experience when you text your heart out to your best friend how much you miss the good old days, your ex, those sleepless nights you spent at said best friend’s house playing Minecraft until 5 am. Space Song is lethargy incarnate. Songs like it grant us permission to vent, permission to cry and sob into a pillow, to regress back into our “mopey teen on Tumblr” days.
Contrast to all that, yet similarly, blink-182 SpongeBob, etc. is lethargy incarnate in a different direction. Memes like this one help us to cope with our sadness. And if you think I’m joking here, I promise you I’m not. I myself have commented about this video being the “cure to depression.” In some sense that’s true. What better way to let off some steam then by a good laugh? By something completely nonsensical and meaningless, something dare I say post-modern?
Both Space Song and blink-182 SpongeBob, etc. are lyrical masterpieces in their own right. Through the delicate construction of poetic narrative with instrumental harmony, this song and meme symbolize both the archetypal trauma of the 21st century - aimlessness, confusion, meaninglessness - and the redemptive power of emotional expression.
Cheers,
Paul
